About the event
This trip is full. Check back later for another!
Description: This easy access trip will take us inside the fence-line and onto the grounds of Naval Support Activity (NSA) Monterey in search of both migrant and local birds. We will also discuss Navy natural resource conservation efforts, with some history thrown in. With Lake Del Monte as its focal point, NSA Monterey offers multiple habitats to search. Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron and Great Egret make the lake their home, and Osprey commonly patrols the lake for prey. We'll also encounter typical oak forest birds such as Oak Titmouse, Chestnut-sided Chickadee and returning winter warblers. No prior birding experience necessary.
Meet: In order to get the group through gate security, participants are asked to park along Sloat Ave near the main gate, located at the intersection of Ninth St and Sloat Ave, here. Once everyone has arrived we will drive through the gate as a group. A government issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.) will be required. Once inside we will park and then stroll around the grounds.
Trip Leader: Todd Wills, NSA Monterey Natural Resources Manager
Trip Difficulty: We’ll enjoy about a mile and a half of moderately-paced walking on flat paved or smooth DG trails.
Facilities: Restrooms and benches are available.
RSVP (required): This trip is full! Check the calendar for our next event in Pacific Grove, or check back later for another NPS event.
